Will Smith Stars in Slavery Drama 'Emancipation'

Apple has decided to bite the bullet and release their Will Smith starring vehicle in time for awards season after all. It was long expected that this would be delayed in order for the slap drama to die down even more, but with their other Oscar player, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, delayed by a year, they’re going to go ahead and release this in early December. Rumor has it it’s Antoine Fuqua’s best film, but what’s with this color desaturation? I don’t know about that.

Another Best Actress Contender Joins the Race with 'Till'

This film about the horrifying murder of Emmett Till in 1955 focuses in on the ordeal of Mamie Till, his mother played by Danielle Deadwyler (Station Eleven) in what’s said to be a harrowing performance. It premiered at the New York Film Festival just yesterday, with reviews not in yet, but most are expecting Deadwyler to gain a lot of attention for this.

Alejandro Innaritu Makes His '8 1/2' With 'Bardo'

So, this movie got really panned out of Venice with words like '‘indulgent,’ ‘narcissistic’ and ‘unbearable’ being thrown around, with others defending its stylish ambition. Innaritu has been accused of pretentiousness before of course with Birdman and Babel, but going all in with an autobiographical story may finally be too far in the Fellini direction for most critics (and who knows, 8 1/2 may well be torn apart if it had come out now instead of in 1963). Then Inarritu cut 22 minutes from the runtime, so that it’s now 2 and half hours instead of closer to three, so the version coming out in December isn’t quite the one that screened earlier. I’m not sure if it should be written off just yet, seeing as how the director has always been embraced by the industry and Academy voters in the past. This one may still be as well.

Cate Blanchett Goes for Oscar #3 in 'Tar'

The reviews for Todd Field’s Tar are universally positive, with critics claiming a career best performance from Cate Blanchett, as you can almost tell from this trailer. Will she get her second lead Oscar and third overall? It’s tough to get three, only a handful have done it (Daniel Day-Lewis, Meryl Streep, Katherine Hepburn, Jack Nicholson and Ingrid Bergman to name the select few). But obviously if anyone can do it it’s her. And for Todd Field, director of In the Bedroom and Little Children, this is his comeback film after 15 years. I’m looking forward to it.

Naomi Ackie is Whitney Houston in 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody'

Got another biopic here! Is it me or are these coming out more and more often now? This one is from the Bohemian Rhapsody writers, so that’s a warning sign. But Kasi Lemmons is a good director so who knows. My biggest problem is Naomi Ackie looks absolutely nothing like Whitney Houston, it’s kind of distracting actually. And if they’re using Whitney’s voice anyway shouldn’t they cast somebody with a bit more resemblance?

Damien Chazelle's 'Babylon' Gets a Trailer

I was looking forward to this movie but this is disappointing. First of all, Margot Robbie is supposed to be playing a Clara Bow type character but does she seem like she’s doing anything other then Harley Quinn again? Is she a good actress? I don’t know. I certainly don’t understand why she has to be in every movie these days. And frankly this whole thing looks more like it’s the 1970’s than the 1920’s. Very Once Upon a Time in Hollywood vibes.

'The Little Mermaid' Gets its Live Action Reboot

Sort of. Most of this is still going to be pretty animated (and ugly looking at that). I hesitate to even post this because of my strong attachment to the original and I HATE these Disney reboots that are trying to just do shot for shot remakes of the cartoons. If they had to do this why couldn’t they just do another version of TLM fairy tale? I don’t want to hear this iconic music arranged and sung as before but not nearly as good. Apparently most people do. These are not true fans in my opinion.

Spielberg's 'The Fablemans' Goes Back to His Childhood

Every director wants their own Roma now. It’s Steven Spielberg’s turn as he basically gives us his own origin story in this movie, which got a massive standing ovation at TIFF last night and is a huge potential Oscar frontrunner now. Michelle Williams plays his mother and according to reports, is headed for the Oscars herself. We’ll see of course. This trailer is way too schmaltzy for me, and sentimental Speilberg isn’t really my favorite.
