'All Quiet on the Western Front' Wins 7 BAFTAS

Well there’s a twist. The BAFTAS went hard for All Quiet, giving it a whopping 7 trophies including Best Picture and Director. Banshees of Inisherin took home four, including screenplay and two supporting acting winners, but Colin Farrell lost to Austin Butler in Best Actor (congrats on the Oscar Austin) while Cate Blanchett continued to steamroll in Best Actress. We’ll see what happens at SAG next weekend, but dismiss the BAFTA acting winners at your peril. They’ve consistently provided clues as to the eventual Oscar winners, so I’d say that Angela Bassett could definitely be upset by Kerry Condon at least. Banshees love will manifest somewhere, thanks to significant overlap between the acting branches in these organizations, and the same goes for All Quiet (likely in techs). BAFTA wasn’t big on Everything Everywhere, giving it a single award in editing, but I think it’s still fine at the Oscars. BAFTA isn’t as good with matching Best Picture or Director.

The Daniels Win the DGA for 'Everything Everywhere All at Once'

Welp. I think that’s a wrap on the Best Picture race. Everything Everywhere is clearly a juggernaut and DGA was the top guild it was least likely to win (with PGA and SAG coming up next week, where it’s favored). Unless there’s a strong backlash now to the idea of awarding this movie (likely with Picture and Director) and a clear alternative to rally around, this is our winner and it’s probably a sweep year.

'Babylon,' 'Everything Everywhere' Win ADG Awards

The Art Directors Guild chose Babylon over Elvis tonight in period feature, so we wait for BAFTA to see which of those two is likely to take the Oscar. Everything Everywhere was actually snubbed in production design at the Oscars, despite all those nominations, so that probably helped it win here tonight in fantasy over Avatar.

The new trailer for the fourth John Wick has everything you’d expect from it. If you’re a fan of this series I’m sure you’re going to like what you see here, but I’m getting kinda tired of them.

New Trailer for Final 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Movie

I’ve never been a fan of this series, so this trailer is really not for me. I don’t even know what there is to say about it, other than all the characters are back and since this is the last one, probably someone’s going to die? James Gunn is now in charge of DC of course, so this is his last GOTG entry. I don’t know if the characters will make further appearances in Marvel stuff, but I guess they could.

Multiple Flashes, Batmen in Super Bowl Trailer for 'The Flash'

After years of delay and a reign of terror by Ezra Miller that’s gone completely ignored by the studio (the perfect example of white privilege here), The Flash is finally coming out this year and we get a look at the highly anticipated return of Michael Keaton as Batman (who now gets to fly around as a CG cartoon. Fun). It’s more multiverse stuff, with a new Supergirl being introduced (who may or may not be the Supergirl that’s going to be getting her own movie according to James Gunn’s multi-year plan for DC). WB execs and James Gunn himself have been hyping this movie beyond all reason, so here’s hoping it at least delivers. But the lead is a big drawback if you ask me.

'Elvis' Wins Two Makeup and Hairstyling Guild Awards

So maybe Elvis is the frontrunner in this category? A lot of people seem to think The Whale has it in the bag for the makeup effects on Brendan Fraser, but I don’t know. The flashy Elvis makeup and hair is very in your face and hard to resist. We’ll have to see what BAFT A does here.

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon Reunite for 'Air'

Looks like another Ford v. Ferrari to me. But it seems to be in Ben Affleck’s directorial wheelhouse (I didn’t realize he’d only directed one movie since Argo). The story seems a little misplaced (why are we celebrating the success of the Nike ad campaign for Air Jordan when there’s not even an MJ in this movie?) but it looks pitched for the old adult audience that has all but vanished from the theaters.

ACE Eddie Nominees Snub 'The Fabelmans'

Don’t ask me why the ACE Eddie noms are coming out a full week after the Oscar nominations, but here they are, finally the last guild to weigh in. The big snub here is Fabelmans, obviously. And editing is a significant guild, so if people were thinking it was still a heavy hitter or possible BP winner, this should bury that notion. I think it’s EEAAO all the way now.

Oddly, the WGA nominees are after the Oscar noms this year, so we couldn’t use them as tea leaves. No that these would have helped but we may have seen that Top Gun and Glass Onion nods coming. Glad to see Nope get some recognition this year after being completely snubbed by the Oscars.

'Everything Everywhere' Leads the Oscar Nominations With 11

Here they are! The Oscar nominations this morning did bring some surprises, as several lone nominees for their films in acting (Andrea Riseborough, Paul Mescal, Brian Tyree Henry, Ana de Armas and Bill Nighy) were good to see. I’ve managed to overlook Triangle of Sadness, a film that came out of the Cannes Film Festival last summer, but I guess I need to see it now. But it sure looks to me like Everything Everywhere has the frontrunner status here- we just need to see if it can win at the guilds (PGA, DGA, SAG) and BAFTA to confirm it.

'All Quiet on the Western Front' Leads the BAFTA Nominations with 14

Well, that sure seems to fill out one slot for Best Picture, doesn’t it? BAFTA goes absolutely wild for All Quiet, solidifying that as the Oscar frontrunner for International Film, I would say, as the Brits will support it and launch it into many categories, presumably. Maybe even director and actor? We’ll see. They also snubbed Michelle Williams, which seems to leave her potentially out in the cold for an Oscar nomination for The Fabelmans, unless the actors branch decides to put her in supporting, where if she’d been this whole time, she would likely be sweeping the category. Top Gun didn’t do especially well here, and since it’s the last piece of evidence we have before the Oscar noms next week, I think this kinda clears the field for Everything Everywhere to dominate on Oscar night. Unless Banshees, which is very strong with BAFTA, somehow comes up strong in the finish, but the Best Picture race seems down to those two if you ask me. I’m still hoping for some surprises on Oscar morning- the Academy tends to go their own way often, and in this year with a lot of fringe contenders, maybe they’ll surprise us.
