The official full trailer for Season 2 of The Morning Show is giving me Newsroom vibes, I have to say, especially with that aside about covering coronavirus. I wonder if the show loses some of its relevance now that it’s probably moving on from the MeToo movement storyline, which drove the entirety of the first season (the weakest episode was the one that didn’t have anything to do with that plot). The show showed signs of unevenness anyway, though the actors (except for Reese Witherspoon) were good.
Beanie Feldstein is Monica Lewinsky in 'American Crime Story: Impeachment'
I don’t know about this casting. Clive Owen as Bill? Edie Falco as Hillary'? Sarah Paulson as Linda Tripp? I don’t even think Beanie Feldstein looks much (at all) like Monica either. The only ACS series I’ve watched so far was The People vs. OJ Simpson (which was good), but I have a feeling this one won’t be as compelling.
HBO's 'Scenes From a Marriage' Gets a Full Trailer
This limited series is a remake of Ingmar Bergman’s 1973 miniseries, which I still haven’t seen, so I feel like I can’t check this one out until I see the original (I’m picky that way). But it’s written and directed by Hagai Levi, who co-wrote and created The Affair (which I liked for a couple of seasons at least). I’m tempted, because both Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain are good actors of course. It starts September 12th.
Netflix Releases a Teaser for 'Sex Education' Season 3
Yay! I love Sex Education and now we know the official Season 3 premiere date! It’s September 17th, so mark your calendars. I don’t know how much longer it lasts because Netflix is so trigger happy with a lot of their original series cancellations these days and I’m not sure how big a hit this one ever was to begin with.
TCA Nominees Include 'Hacks,' 'Ted Lasso' and 'Girls5Eva'
The Television Critics Association has weighed in with their picks and there’s a lot of Emmy overlap here, including WAY too much love for WandaVision (that show is not that good, people). At least they honored Peacock’s Girls5Eva after it was unjustly overlooked, ditto for Ethan Hawke and The Good Lord Bird, as well as It’s a Sin, both heartbreaking Emmy snubs for me.

'The Crown' and 'The Mandalorian' Lead the Emmy Nominations; HBO Beats Netflix by 1 Nod
Well, here they are! The Emmy nominations are in, and like I thought, Ted Lasso was showered with with love all across the board and is so winning Comedy Series (though Hacks did extremely well and is likely to win some major awards too). Over in Drama, The Crown remains the frontrunner after landing pretty much its entire cast in the nominations, including Tobias Menzies (yay!) and even Emerald Fennell (really?). But it has real competition, as The Handmaid’s Tale remains absolutely beloved by Emmy voters despite its decreasing critical praise, and HBO’s Lovecraft Country surprisingly cleaned up as well, with 18 nods (will they reconsider the show’s cancellation they just announced last week?) The Mandalorian grew even stronger from its first season, tying The Crown with 24 nominations, and Amazon’s The Boys got a series and a writing nod (with those nominations I have to think Antony Starr was close to getting in- maybe next year). And in limited, WandaVision got all the big nods for series, actor, actress, and three writing nominations. That…is questionable to say the least, especially because they completely snubbed The Good Lord Bird for anything and I cannot for one second agree that WandaVision deserves to be there and Ethan Hawke doesn’t. Bullshit. But I May Destroy You (the best show of 2020 without a doubt) finally got its due here with recognition for Michaela Coel and her co-star Paapa Essiedu- I want this to win so badly but I don’t know if anything beats The Queen’s Gambit (and it does it’s probably Mare of Easttown).

Other notes: Conan O’Brien was nominated for his final season in late night, but of course they kicked out the one woman in the category, Samantha Bee, to make room for him. Typical. Doesn’t matter for the win though, as it’s John Oliver until it’s not, and that probably can’t be predicted until his show stops airing (it should be The Daily Show again by now). It’d be nice if A Black Lady Sketch Show could stop SNL from lazily being name checked every year for that sketch series award as well. Bridgerton gets one in series and one in Actor for the breakout one season wonder that is Rege-Jean Page, but I wouldn’t expect him to win. Though with no heavy frontrunner in the category I suppose it’s possible. Finally, the big history made today was Pose’s Mj Rodriguez getting nominated for Best Actress in a Drama, the first trans woman to do so. I think that makes her a threat for the win, but Emma Corrin will be tough to beat, as The Crown is the solid frontrunner in series. The Emmys will air on September 19th, hosted by Cedric the Entertainer.
It's Kendall vs. Logan in 'Succession' Season 3
No release date yet, but the third season of Succession looks likely to satisfy fans’ cravings for the ridiculous wordplay and internecine battles of the Roy family. Newly minted Emmy winner Jeremy Strong (still think it should have been Brian Cox) is going head to head with the family patriarch (if only this actually happened in real life, as the Murdoch sons are both too cowardly and/or evil themselves to take down their dad). Also, it’s weird that HBO advertises this show like it’s a full on black comedy. I mean, maybe it kind of is, but the commercials make it seem like a riot fest, which it’s not (in my opinion).
Keegan-Michael Key and Cecily Strong Belt Their Way Through 'Schmigadoon!'
Yay, a summer show I can get behind! Sketch comedy vets Keegan-Michael Key and Cecily Strong (of Key and Peele and SNL fame, respectively) get to embrace their love of musicals in this silly spoof, which I’m guessing is very niche, for die hard fans of movie musicals and/or die hard fans of the two of them. I’m the former, but find the two of them very likable, so I’m all in on this one. It starts July 16th.
Coach Lasso is Back in New Trailer for 'Ted Lasso' Season 2
Getting closer! Now just a month away from the second season of Ted Lasso, which will likely be airing as its first season is crowned the newly minted Emmy winner in comedy series (my prediction, as the buzz and the love for this lovable little show continues to grow as people discover it). Speaking of the Emmys, the nominations are just two and a half weeks away and I’d expect this show to pick up quite a few of them.
'The Morning Show' is Back in September for Season 2
I missed this trailer last week, but having recently caught up on the messy but very entertaining Morning Show, I’ll definitely be tuning in for Season 2 in the fall. The first season couldn’t have been more timely if it tried, with a MeToo inspired storyline that traced the zeitgeist exactly, but has me wondering where Steve Carell’s Mitch Kessler (basically a stand-in for Matt Lauer) goes from here with his role on the show. Jennifer Aniston was really good here too, as a narcissistic antihero who does unlikable surprisingly well (though I can’t say the same for Reese Witherspoon, who seems miscast in a baffling character that bears no recognition to real life, but with such a strong ensemble surrounding her, luckily it doesn’t matter too much).
